What to Expect at Your First Appointment
During your first appointment, I will try to understand what you have been struggling with and what you are hoping to accomplish. We will discuss your prior treatment, if any, in an attempt to understand what has worked and what hasn’t worked for you in the past. You and I will also be assessing whether or not we are a good fit - whether the services I provide fit in with your goals and whether I am the best person for you to work with on those goals. If either of us determine that you would be better served elsewhere, I will provide you with several names of other psychiatrists you can contact.
I believe that treatment involves more than just medication. In addition to medication, you are likely to find that psychotherapy, physical exercise, mindfulness, spiritual practice, and social support can all play a role in wellness. We will discuss how you might use each of these tools to reach your goals. I may also suggest that you have a physical examination with your primary care doctor, or recommend checking blood work to look for underlying problems. If you are seeing a therapist, you can sign a release so that I may speak to him or her (if you choose).
You will need to bring your insurance card and the appropriate copay with you to the appointment. In addition, it is helpful if you bring a list of your medications and doses.
